Education
Ongoing hospice palliative care education and training is offered to volunteers, community members and organizations, service providers, and the business community throughout the year.
Basic Hospice Training
Basic Hospice Training is a 35-hour community education course that builds knowledge, confidence and practical skills for supporting people who are grieving, dying, or living with a life-limiting illness.
The course is open to anyone who would benefit from a deeper understanding of grief, hospice palliative care, and compassionate support. Participants may include family and informal caregivers, health and social service professionals, community and faith leaders, or individuals who want to be better prepared to support others in their personal, professional, or community roles.
Through guided learning and discussion, participants explore communication and healthy boundaries, family dynamics, hospice palliative care, pain management, advance care planning, grief and bereavement, diversity and end-of-life care, psychosocial and spiritual care, ethical practice, self-care, and other related topics.
Participants leave with foundational knowledge and skills that can be applied wherever they encounter people who are grieving, approaching the end of life, or living with a life-limiting illness.
Course length: 35 hours
Cost: $130, including the training manual and resource materials
For prospective Chilliwack Hospice Society volunteers
Completion of Basic Hospice Training is required for Chilliwack Hospice Society’s client- and patient-support volunteers. However, completing the course does not guarantee placement in a volunteer role with the Society. Volunteer placement is separate from course participation and depends on the Society’s needs and the suitability of each applicant for available roles.
