The Chilliwack Hospice Society offers a 30-hour basic hospice volunteer training two times a year for anyone interested in learning more about Hospice Palliative Care and/or becoming a Client & Patient Volunteer.
Cost: $125.00 includes training manual and resource materials

CONTINUING EDUCATION & RESOURCES
Continuing Education: We provide ongoing education to our volunteers in areas of death, dying and bereavement through workshops and conferences.
VIGIL TRAINING
The goal of this one-day training is to provide hospice volunteers with increased knowledge and understanding of the psychosocial and physical needs of hospice clients and their families during the last 72 hours of life. Some of the topics that will be covered during this workshop are:
- overview of vigil services
- role of a vigil volunteer
- dying process - final hours
- defining a good death
- complementary comfort measures
- protocol for planned home death
- debriefing after a death
LOSS, GRIEF AND BEREAVEMENT: A PRACTICAL APPLICATION
This experiential workshop will provide participants with practical hands-on skills and knowledge about loss, grief and bereavement. This workshop is designed for hospice volunteers and healthcare professionals working in end-of-life care. Some of the topics that will be covered during this workshop are:
- defining grief, anticipatory grief and bereavement
- the personal nature of grief
- different styles of grieving
- "normal" vs. complicated grief
- supporting grieving children & teens
- debriefing after a death
Community Resources
Resource Library: We have a large selection of books and videos related to topics around death, dying and bereavement. Many of these resources can be borrowed by members of the Chilliwack community. Individuals can also watch videos at our Centre or read books that are kept at our Centre.
Speaking Presentations/Training: Members of our staff and volunteers are available to speak to community groups and provide training around the philosophy of hospice care.
